Over Under and In Iguazu Falls

I hesitated to go to Iguazu Falls for one main reason: my budget.

Foz de Iguaçu/Puerto Iguazu is basically, no completely, out of the way of everything. Whether you’re in Brazil or Argentina, it is not near any of the main cities you tend to visit. The bus from most cities takes over 20 hours, flights prices vary but are generally around 100 euros. If you too are hesitating:

THE FALLS ARE WORTH IT.

I started off doing the Brazilian side. The only real downside is that apart from the main circuit most of the activities on this side are pretty pricey. (You have to pay to hike).

The main (free) path can be done in a couple of hours so if you really wanted to you can do both sides in one day (if you rush the Argentinian side). If you have two whole days I highly recommend the Bird Park “Parque das Aves“. It is a beautiful park where you can walk into some enclosures and come in close contact with the animals.

If you can’t make it to the park you will still com across some impressive butterflies at the falls. hint hint

It is a little pricey but I do recommend the boat that takes you under the falls on the Argentinian side. If you want to pay by card make sure to pay at the tourist office as you can’t pay by card once you get further down the trail.

I stayed at Hostel Poesia which I definitely vouch for.  It is one of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in. Comfy beds, amazing breakfast, swimming pool, nice terrace area and a cinema room. The staff were brilliant and if you have an extra day I highly recommend you ask them about where you can swim in the falls. They will take you to a spot where the locals go. Definitely a highlight of my trip!

People also recommend the Tetris Container Hostel it’s all in the name.

  • You must have CASH for the Argentinian side. There is an ATM but it is often broken and runs out of money on a daily basis.. you must have ARGENTINEAN PESOS we exchanged them down at the main supermarket on the Brazilian side.
  • Beware of the not so cute Coati , they will steal your stuff. Keep your food away from them.
  • Always check flight prices before buying a bus ticket, it can be cheaper and prices vary. Beware of some companies that offer cheap flights for nationals but add a huge tax at the end for foreigners
